Hello, friends!
On account of having a busy work schedule during my actual birthday, I'd like to host a post-birthday celebration next Thursday, June 25th at 17:00 UTC (1pm EST). The event? A Challenge Mode raids mass!
While challenge mode can be daunting because you're racing the clock, the point of this event is to have fun. That being said, I hope to see as many people at the event as possible! (including those of you not in Casual BA).
I will host the event in my clan chat "OathSoul" .
Some notes on Challenge Mode raids, for those not experienced with it:
+ Challenge Mode consists of every possible raid room in one specific layout, separated into 4 floors (instead of the normal 3). The layout consists of the following (see attachment 1).
+ People may opt certain roles (defined primarily by spellbook):
Normal spellbook - bring Fire surge / Water surge / telegrab (optional; not needed if someone has it). Used mainly for Ice demon and Tightrope (telegrab, again only 1 person needs), as well as Olm (water surge to douse flame);
Lunar spellbook - bring Vengeance / Humidify (optional; not needed if someone has it). Used mainly for Tekton and Vasa, but can be used as much as you can afford to cast it, so most people should at least bring Vengeance. Vengeance is not needed for Olm, though Humidify can help!;
Ancients - bring Ice Barrage. Used mainly for Tightrope on the rangers (to aggro/safespot all), and Muttadiles.
+ Depending on the party size, certain rooms can be quite annoying when people are running everywhere (shamans, vasa, etc). If you feel uncomfortable doing a certain room, you can always make supplies!
+ For Olm, teams will typically "mage set" it. Some useful links for understanding those mechanics (there are plenty of videos online).
www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXLTAEnbE5Q - Chymistry's summary of it - a more comedic than helpful guide
www.youtube.com/watch?v=714IJM8Xjs0 - a more detailed description of it
A few things not shown or discussed in the above links, which generally help:
- Everyone who's running the head can dd in the first row, leaving the mage skipper much more room to deal with Olm's phase-specific attacks (poison trail, burn, falling crystals).
- If you mage skip, it's better to stand in the middle tile as soon as Olm looks at the mage side. This mitigates the flame wall attack entirely, keeping Olm set to mage.
- If melee set and trying to switch to mage set, it's generally easier (coordinating with the team) to tank 1 hit on the mage side (instead of what's shown in the second video linked above).
Gear setups
Challenge Mode raids tend to demand high-end gear that not everyone will have. Here are some alternatives to consider (best-in-slot > cheaper alternatives):
Twisted bow > ACB (ruby bolts) > Dragon crossbow (ruby bolts)
Sanguinesti staff > Trident of the swamp
Scythe > Dragonhunter lance > Abyssal tentacle
Dragon warhammer > Bandos godsword
Separated by room
Tekton: Scythe (even consider Inquisitor's mace) ~ Elder maul
Ice demon: Fire surge with max +dmg%, Tome of fire > Twisted bow
Shaman: Slayer helmet (on task) > Armadyl helmet > Neitiznot faceguard
Vanguards (ranger): Rapier, Dragon claws special > Scythe > Dragonhunter lance > some stab weapon
Vanguards (mager): Twisted bow > Blowpipe, ACB (idk lol)
Vanguards (meleer): Max mage gear with Sanguinesti staff > Trident
Vespula: Twisted bow > ACB (longrange) > Sanguinesti/Trident (longrange)
Vasa: Twisted bow > ACB > Blowpipe ; Rapier, Dragon claws special > Dragonhunter lance > Abyssal dagger
Mystics: Best range gear with Salve(ei) > Necklace of anguish > Fury
Muttadile, small: Blowpipe > Sanguinesti staff (in melee gear) > ACB
Muttadile, large: Twisted Bow > ACB
*The equipment in this color is gear not needed for Olm (unless it's your best-in-slot). Keep in mind you can forego certain gear switches in the final fight to take extra pots, as the fight is expected to run through more phases.
I may not have included everything above, or I may have been inaccurate in my thoughts on what's relatively better. Feel free to comment if you see anything worth correcting
Running the mass
As many people who participate in this event will want to minimize the amount of chaos that can happen during the raid, I've decided that adding a sample strategy will benefit everyone. Feel free to comment on ideas that may be better than what I've listed; I'm by no means an expert on CMRs but put here what I figured could work.
Tekton - People start off veng'd. One designated person will lure Tekton such that people can land their first dwh/bgs spec before Tekton stops to attack. So long as a few dwh specs land, as well as some bgs specs, it should be totally feasible for people to use D claw specs to deal massive damage before Tekton goes back to the anvil.
Crabs - The MVP of Tekton will drop pots at the end of Crabs room; having a few people tackle the crabs is better than having many.
Scavs / Resource gathering - We will rush planks to build the chest asap (ideally the maximum storage chest available). A few people can stay behind to gather 2nds / lockpicks for everyone in the raid (assuming a ratio of 17j / 8m / 1-2c per person).
Ice demon - safespot for this is at the North wall. Only one person is needed to aggro the ice demon (ie. they stay away from north side).
Shamans - the best way of tackling this room is to safespot individual shamans. One person will move to the Northwest corner and hope the Shaman jumps there, so people can safespot it along the western border. Rinse and repeat for each shaman (though I'm not sure how many there will be in a mass, so it can get tricky!)
Resource room #1 - Here, people may split into groups:
- Some people may opt to rush straight into vanguards with their own pots. These people should be given the Overload doses obtained from Tekton (so a max of 8 people can start vanguards immediately); they may use it as early as Ice demon or Shamans. Given the vanguards will be tougher in a mass, this may not work out too well..
- Others may opt to "small prep" vanguards; they make enough raids potions (including overloads) so they can join in that combat room asap. A decent ratio is 5 brews / 1 restore / 1 enhance / 1 overload.
- The rest of the party should "full prep" the potions. Ideally, those with solid Farming levels will stay behind to pick all the herbs to last (hopefully) the entire raid for everyone. A sample ratio of herbs and pots per person: 23 buchu / 1-2 nox / 3-6 golpar ; 15 brews / 6 restores / 1-2 enhances, 1-2 overloads.
*From this point forward, people should try to not pick up others' pots if they die, unless absolutely necessary. The person who died should be responsible for getting their own pots, and should only replenish supplies from the chest if their pile is still in a dangerous spot.
Vanguards - Some people may opt to follow their vanguard, while others may want to stand still and gear-switch. Either should be fine, given this is a mass raid, so long as damage is still spread equally.
Thieving - People with higher thieving levels may lockpick the chests. Some people who enter the room should help make pots (whether after depositing some grubs, or just dedicated to potion making).
Vespula - Once the thieving chest is finished, at least one person should lead the charge to "set" Vespula to avoid it hitting a Lux grub. Everyone else able to enter at this time just has to safespot the room.
Tightrope - There should be people tanking the magers, and other people tanking the rangers (people having Ice barrage here can splash them to aggro more easily, giving the rope crosser safe passage). Finally, someone can telegrab the crystal that the rope-crosser drops right in front of the rope.
Guardians - It's important to synchronize timing to avoid unnecessary damage. This is where people should also re-veng in preparation for veng-bombing Vasa (a risky strategy depending on how many people are in the room, as you could get stacked out). Throw up Redemption if you need to be Veng'd during this time, and Protect Melee if you're good to go.
Vasa - to veng bomb the teleport attack effectively, everyone should be healed up as much as possible before the teleport activates. Runners should not pray Protect Mage as they run to the center. After Vasa gets off a crystal, people can afford to stay in place for a 1-2 ranged attacks before having to move away; otherwise, being as far as possible from it while still attacking gives you the most time to dodge rocks. I'd recommend watching some of the WR youtube videos to see what people do from different perspectives. Additionally, it may benefit everyone if someone can dwh spec Vasa each time it gets off a crystal (and maybe even right after the teleport attack!). If Vasa activates a second teleport attack, runners should use Protect Mage to mitigate damage done to everyone (avoiding unnecessary deaths).
Skeletal Mystics - Target 1 mystic at a time to avoid unnecessary damage. With a couple left, you can safely start heading towards the exit while keeping the mystics safespotted.
Muttadiles - Blowpipe for DPS, Sang for possible healing on the small mutta. Ice Barrage will also keep it away from the tree, making the kill fast. For the small mutta, you can also safespot from the large mutta's mage attack by standing against the southwest wall of the room. For the large mutta, the south corner is a great spot to keep it from meleeing you (so long as most people are there). People who bring a ZGS can also spec it for better freezing chances than Ice barrage.
Final prep - assuming everything works out perfectly, everyone should have enough supplies to get through Olm. Otherwise, it may be best for people to replant seeds / make more potions as necessary at this point.
Last thoughts:
Fully expecting this mass to be completely bonkers. Still, I hope this'll be as fun as I'm envisioning it will be. Let's see some drops, too!
For those that can't make it due to schedules/time zones, I can try another time that caters to a different time zone soon after [TBD].
Please DM me on Discord (name: OathSoul) or PM me in-game if you'd like to attend but lack Challenge Raids experience. I'll otherwise assume most people understand the flow of the raid, though I'd be happy to help out in advance of the event
