Codenames Tournament!
We will be hosting a Codenames 2v2 Tournament this Saturday 30th April, at 19:00UTC.
It will be an elimination-style event, where teams of two (one Operative and one Spymaster) play each other, and losing teams will be knocked out from the tournament. Winning teams will then move on to compete for the "Codenames Champ" Discord role, as well as cash prizes for the winning teams! The 1st place players will each receive 20m, and the runners-up will each receive 5m.
Everyone is welcome to come and spectate the matches in Discord, and discuss what's going on in voice chat. I will be streaming the bracket and updating it in voice chat.
You can sign up by replying to this thread or by telling me on Discord: Equi#4976. You may sign up with a partner or by yourself. On the day of the event, we will partner up any unpaired participants.
If you are unfamiliar with Codenames or want to get some practice in beforehand, games take place regularly in the #other-games channel in the Discord server where you're always welcome to join. You can also check out codenames.game to familiarise yourself.
General Codenames rules:
- Clues given by the Spymaster must relate to the meanings of the words on the board. They must not relate to how the words are spelled, if the words rhyme, sound similar, or refer to the position of the words on the board.
- For example, the clue "Corner" would not be acceptable if it was implying the correct word was in the corner of the board. However, the clue "Corner" would be acceptable if it were hinting at the word "triangle" because triangles have corners.
- Clues should also be one word clues, unless referring to a specific concept.
- For example, the clue "New York" would be acceptable, because New York is a city in America. On the other hand, the clue "Old Car" would not be acceptable.
- If you're playing as an operative, you're not allowed to look up the words your spymasters give you or get outside help in any way. Spymasters can Google things all they want, though. We trust that players will not cheat, as this ruins the fun of the game.
Tournament specifics:
- Two players per team: no more and no less.
- Each team will be timed while their side is playing. You are technically allowed to keep playing if the timer reaches zero, but you should aim to finish your turn before then. You may be disqualified at the hosts' discretion if you are intentionally stalling for time or are consistently taking too long.
- You and your partner decide between yourselves who plays spymaster and who plays operative per game. There are no restrictions on this, so you may designate one spymaster for the entire tournament if you wish.
- Games will most likely be best of 3, although if we have a larger than expected turnout, some early rounds may be a single game.
- Teams may decide to reset the board if they feel that their words are too difficult, or the opposing team's words are too easy, etc. Each team has one (1) opportunity to request a board reset per matchup.
- In the case where the number of teams is not some power of 2, there will be some teams that play more games than others. The winners of these teams will have advantage over the next "bye" team by moving first and gaining an additional reset opportunity.
