Hi everyone!
[incoming long message; you ought to know me and my long messages by now, right?]
This one is going to be a farewell, though. Before I get to that, I’d like to talk about my experiences of BA. (Read on at your own risk, because you just might get a shoutout!)
(Note: anything in slightly larger text/ Times New Roman font will be a hyperlink to a forum / screenshot / clip; check these links out as well! I may edit in more hyperlinks over the next couple days..)
Trip Down Memory Lane
It all started back in RS2, when I walked into BA thinking “what’s this mini game about?” I soon had to choose my first-ever role, to which I chose Healer. I *loved* healing to the point where I didn’t touch any other role (I guess I had to, for torso, at some point). But basically, I played as Healer 99.99% of the time (pun intended). I also had no knowledge of any BA clans at the time (or even what a “runescape clan” was).
Fast-forward to OSRS (still pre-CBA), when I’ve revisited these great halls of Barbarian Assault. The nostalgia hit me - all the fun times I’ve had as Healer, etc. I soon met Twolesslives, who I’ve had a lot of fun playing with because I knew how good at Defender twoless was. I then met other individuals (notably Sandflea1234, Actually Jim, Knavess, Dad Arms, Konway, Big T, UIM Skirmish) who were absolute powerhouses in BA, and great friends I made/ partied up with whenever I played the mini game. (This is all pre-CBA. Fun fact: I remember playing a game with bwahahah, who I absolutely despised after he criticized my healing play style)
Soon, as per recommended by Twolesslives, Dad Arms, ThorinII, and others (sorry if I forgot your name), I joined the clan chat “Casual BA." I had already gotten an idea of clans, as at the time, I was in Cr1tikal’s cc (youtube penguinz0; you might even remember the “monkey nuts economic explosion” of OSRS). (Fun fact #2: Serpico and I joined CBA at around the same time!)
Anyways, I was pretty new to this cc, and I soon had mad respect for the individuals who made guides (Dr Lumbridge, Lord Shayne, iTaste, etc) for those kinds of roles. I never really implemented “codes” into my playstyle, though; I always played Healer based on what was comfortable for me / habitual. I soon picked up on the Attacker role (this was pre-BP ban), and Big T gave me the nickname “Master Wizard” for opting to mage in BA.
*Seriously, it’s actually really fun - if you want to try this, a couple of tips:
1) Don’t autocast spells! It’s much more fun to manually cast, because you can move around after each hit, similar to “kiting.” (For all you LoL enthusiasts out there)
2) You can safely get 4-6 hits before the call change, followed by 7-9 hits every call. (I challenge you to get a 7th hit before the 2nd call, though! I’ve only occasionally pulled this off. No cheating, by the way!)
(Fun fact #3: This was my first post on the forums! Check it out here)
Anyways, my involvement with the CBA community has always been minimal. (Fun fact #4: at one point, twoless trust-traded me full ancestral/ max mage gear, against the advice of other cba’ers (no one knew “Oblivia9999”), and I traded right back! Not that I'm encouraging trust-trading or anything; you should still be cautious..) I’ve rarely participated in races, and only sometimes with events (favorites being Hide n Seek, Easy Clues, Manhunt, and of course the 1-year and 1.5-year anniversaries). I’ve not often talked in the clan chat, at least until this summer when I became more active. Things especially changed when I got more into Discord, having joined the CBA group, and other friend groups in Runescape. I'd never have thought to be able to speak to the people I played with, let alone those I've first played with!
Because of my tendency to play with randoms (this is what I’ve been used to), I found the need to make some posts on the CBA forum regarding “Playing with the BA Inexperienced”.
It was also as of this summer, where I got much more into Raids (some of my first experiences being solo runs - imagine that, with my kind of stats! My first solo raid clocked at around 3.5 hours!). 430 and I did a lot of duos, and I soon got to raid with other individuals in super-awesome, chill teams much more regularly (as well as some streams with iTaste; one of them having none other than Chymistry in the voice chat, who criticized “this dude in a samurai hat doing fishing," followed by this clip). Not only that, but the 1.5-year anniversary, my (1-month delayed) custom Hide n Seek event, and promotion to bronze star were also super awesome (and unexpected!) events, to say the least. Lastly, the most notable race was the most previous races we had, this past Sunday. I participated in one race, and coincidentally (unknowingly) to Obama x Serp, he made a special variant of the races that fit my usual playstyle - no forces, no stalls, no glitches, 8-egg queen (and on a US world, too! Although it was somewhat laggy..) Participating in this race was a nice way for me to close out
Now that we’re caught up (done with the “trip down Memory Lane, as they say”), time to give a (maybe temporary?) farewell speech.
This Saturday will be my last day as a member in OSRS. After my membership runs out, I intend to not touch the game this coming semester. Basically, I really need to crack down on my studies, and any log-in time I put towards this (enjoyable) game will be a distraction. I don't want to say this, but for me, OSRS has been one of the reasons I've slacked off on studies and ultimately delayed my graduation.
This is to say - it's not that I hated this experience. I've really enjoyed being a part of the CBA community, and being super-active this summer. It was really awesome stuff. I got to take my overall experience outside BA, getting into raids for the first time, and that took my enjoyment for the game to the next level (I made a lot of money from raids, as well as new friends!!).
I just need to take my schooling seriously. I'm super-close to finishing my major in Astrophysics (yes; this major is another reason my graduation was delayed - I've actually lost interest in this field over time, from some of the classes). However, as of this summer, a new major in Planetary Sciences opened up. I've taken some of these courses recently, because I feel this new major resonates with me much more than Astrophysics. Now that it's a major, I want to basically either switch into that, or have that as my 2nd major (another reason my graduation is being delayed).
Again, it's been super fun this summer. Runescape has always been nostalgic for me, and I always approach this game thinking "I want to have fun." That's how I play BA, Raids, talk to people.. Being part of this community made that happen for me. While school will be my utmost priority, I may still want to be active in the Discord (participating in discussions, DM's, etc), though no guarantees (depending on my course load).
I also have no guarantees on coming back online. If I do come online, I may log back in during Winter Break, with a possible exception for Thanksgiving Break. (If you see me on at any other time, just yell at me with a “Do your homework!” or something.)
Again, CBA has made my overall experience that much more enjoyable. From 43 43 43’s solving my infamous “BA Riddle #8” on the forum, to Omen and I discussing my ideas for the special variant of Hide n Seek, to co-hosting the 1.5yr anniversary event with Faardo, tica, and Dad Arms, to playing lots of games of chess against Serpico (and losing a lot, mind you), to my iconic speech when I was promoted to bronze star, to my dedication for trying to achieve 99 Untrimmed Slayer cape (and proving everyone wrong who doubted the possibility of accomplishing this), to my recent 07scape subreddit post on a “New combat-based Lunar spell” and its feedback, to all those scuffed moments with the Raids group(s) (members including iTaste, Final Rush, iTake, Rick Grimes, Dad Arms, Nip City, SlayinSim, Generics, Riley, 430, Nilr, Bubbly Lyfe, Zazuba; Jungle Wreck, Knavess, and others), to hilarious moments on skribbl.io (and being called a hacker)... and a whole lot of other fun times!
I do hope to see this community continue to thrive, as it’s full of energy that makes anyone want to be a part of it. Sure, people might be negative to one another, or competitive, among the positive vibes in here. But the way I see it - at the end of the day, as long as you remember that it is a game, and that the point of games is to have fun (as well as hopefully help others around you have fun), then that’s what matters.
Cheers,
Oblivia9999
P.S. If you didn’t get a shoutout, know that I typed up all this stuff from the memories that stood out to me in the moments of typing this. If you and I had awesome times together, it’s because that’s how I wanted to experience this game with everyone I played with
